Such a wonderfully entertaining and extraordinarily insightful series that was never really given a chance to find its audience.Tommy Kraskerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564935526936828636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-2041763305041896622021-04-04T14:13:06.256-04:002021-04-04T14:13:06.256-04:00I am thrilled to hear someone sing the praises of ...I am thrilled to hear someone sing the praises of swingtown!

as I said in my post, it's my favorite television series. I am so sorry. You know, right around the time I published this post, I had just watched Firefly, actually for the first time. And I made a conscious choice not to include it, because I had some reservations about it. And now for the life of me, I cannot remember what those reservations were. Anyway, I am actually in the process of adding another 10 entries to this post, which will be published this spring, and I'm going to do another Firefly rewatch, so that – if I don't include it – at least I can explain why. I'm aware that it's widely considered the greatest of all one-season wonders.Tommy Kraskerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564935526936828636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-57423575218565081392017-10-09T18:23:55.411-04:002017-10-09T18:23:55.411-04:00I am so thrilled that you watched! It was one of the few times when a network executive cancelled a show and offered up one of those mournful pronouncements ("It pains me to have to let this one go") that I actually believed them. Nina Tassler at CBS seemed so sorry to have to pull the plug, but it had been so savaged by the critics initially that its first-week numbers were lousy, and then there was really no compatible lead-in on the CBS line-up that might help it build its audience. But man, it was a splendid series.Tommy Kraskerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564935526936828636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-19836678804112182762017-09-08T08:02:43.917-04:002017-09-08T08:02:43.917-04:00We are watching Swingtown now thanks to this recom...We are watching Swingtown now thanks to this recommendation from years ago :) We love it. Everything you said is spot on. I wish the show would have been renewed -- mostly just to continue to watch Miriam Shor's amazingly nuanced evolution. The kids though.... ugh! If there were a season 2, I hope the kids would all be off at summer camp the entire time!DerekBishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04097448651973894076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-8933326658535241142016-06-01T12:24:42.982-04:002016-06-01T12:24:42.982-04:00Definitely Firefly, a marvellous, funny, clever pi...Definitely Firefly, a marvellous, funny, clever piece of work. (This post was originally "My Five Favorite etc..", but I could not narrow it down...) And I agree: sometimes the hardest cancellations aren't the ones where the series is wonderful, but where the series shows promise -- where you see it just starting to find its way, and everything's starting to gel -- and then it's gone. I was rewatching "High Society" recently (which prompted my including it here); the first six episodes are scrappy and unfocused, then they do a soft reboot, and it instantly starts to improve. By episode 10, you're seeing enormous promise, and then, three episodes later, it's gone. And you're left thinking, "But it was just getting great!"Tommy Kraskerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564935526936828636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-47498959441389132362016-06-01T09:21:07.699-04:002016-06-01T09:21:07.699-04:00I'm not sure what your next five one-season wo...I'm not sure what your next five one-season wonders will be, but I feel as though 'Awake' and 'Firefly' are worthy additions to any list of this ilk. Although 'Awake' finished satisfactorily, the concept still had plenty of mileage left in it. And nothing needs to be said about 'Firefly'. It's cancellation is still up there as the most embarrassing thing to happen in America outside of Donald Trump's hair. I was also rather partial to 'The Secret Circle'. Season one didn't blow me away, but it showed promise. There again, I thought the same thing about 'Glee' and 'Heroes' and look what happened there. ABC seemed to give up on the show so quickly: I remember during the winter months they were going to try it out one week on Wednesday nights, after their successful comedy block, to bring in some new viewers -- and then, at the last minute, they changed their minds. They could not decide on a strategy; promotion was minimal and ineffectual. And then at the end of the season they renewed two other shows with lower ratings, just because they were produced in-house. Forever could easily have blossomed into a long-running hit, but ABC mishandled and mistreated it from the get-go.Tommy Kraskerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564935526936828636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6768495027896028196.post-8014717811644499132016-06-01T07:37:05.983-04:002016-06-01T07:37:05.983-04:00Forever should be brought back!
